It is a native Canadian maple which is grown from seed collected from an identified
Canadian location or seed zone.
It could be any one of the ten native Canadian maples, for example a Big Leaf Maple from
British Columbia, an Ontario Sugar Maple or a Red Maple from Quebec. These seeds have
been grown into seedlings, saplings or larger trees according to the best nursery practices.
Maples with these attributes are very difficult to purchase. Almost all of the retail nurseries or
garden centres stock of maples are cultivars or saplings grown from unidentified seeds and then
shipped in from the United States.
THE MAPLE TREE IS CANADA’S ARBOREAL EMBLEM. CANADIANS DESERVE THE
OPPORTUNITY TO PURCHASE TRULY NATIVE MAPLES GROWN FROM CANADIAN SEED.
What a MLF maple is not...
It’s not an imported, non-native maple from Europe, Asia, or a hybrid or cultivar crossbred (for
shape or colour) from other maples. Examples of these are the Norway Maple from Europe, the
Green Mountain Maple grown for its crown shape or the Crimson King Maple grown for its leaf
colour. The seeds used to grow these trees have not come from an identified Canadian location or
seed zone.
When purchasing one of Canada’s ten native maples ask for a genuine maple grown from native Canadian seed.
