Accomplishments in 2008

In 2008 we enabled and cost-shared the planting of some 8,500 maples. Of this total, 3,700 were saplings and trees from the nurseries that we deal with. About 75% of these maples were sugars, the balance being silver and red. MLF also cost-shared in the purchase of 4,800 seedlings, all of which were red maples. MLF provided funding of approximately $53,000 which coupled with the shared costs means that $106,000 worth of maples were planted.

While our shift to larger stock will guarantee far higher survival rates, our expenditures were naturally higher than in 2007. We are now placing maples back on the landscape on roadsides, in hedgerows on laneways and along property lines which is MLF’s primary objective. Cost-sharing tree purchase does not seem to have diminished demand. In fact, MLF’s worry is about insufficient stock to meet future demands on a sustainable basis.

It should be noted that in 2007, our activities were limited almost solely to purchasing seedlings and supplying them free of charge to landowners.
